Take Off for my Hobby
I have worked in the Electrical and Buildings industry for 60 years, with only being out of work for 40 minutes, which was the train journey from leaving Liberty to an accountants office in East Finchley. where i met the owner. We chatted about my previous work experience and he said he had just bought a large new house in NW7 and his father had a very large one on Bishops Avenue N2..Would I be interested in looking after them ?. This became a working relationship that is ongoing to date.
I did my work as self employed for several years, mainly on his family and other people’s large, high end properties and then worked for him direct on his Residential and Commercial portfolio on Building and Electrical services and compliance.. I even fitted in working with TV’s “The Curious Gardeners” Gordon Taylor and Guy Cooper on several high end London projects.
Retirement age arrived ..My employer asked me to stay on , although I decided 2 - 3 days only, We agreed : (He said he would consider full retirement when i was 90 ). This enabled me to be more hands on with my craft hobbies in my Shed-Workshop and also spend more time on annual opening of our garden for National Garden Scheme, Red Cross, RSPCA and The London Gardens Society, which we did for 10 years, winning a few awards along the way, plus several TV appearances. We still have a monthly column in Garden News.
I love working with Wood and Electrical Light Fittings and I am totally into Recycling and Up-Cycling. My main expertise is Electrical, which I have lots of experience in for 60 years, although I pride myself on being a good Mechanical Engineer / Artist and a nifty Welder as well.
I really cannot wait to get more involved, and believe me there are a lot more stories & blogs of past and present to share, I am 75 now and have no intention of stopping and hope everyone enjoys the ShedArt-79 experience as much as I am going to and if it self-funds, all the better.
