James (Jem) Ward ..”The Black Diamond” 1880 - 1884. English Champion 1825 -1831. He was first fighter to be disciplined by The Pugilistic Society under The London Prize Ring Rules for Throwing a Fight. He had a very chequered career and became an Artist and Violinist…all worth a read. The print shows his name as James, But he always insisted he was to be called Jem, so probably would have not been happy with this ..Which makes it all the more unusual.
