Thomas Shelton 1787 - 1830..”The Navigator” Famous for losing a bet gambling dice in a Hampsted/London pub, which cost hi his money and clothes he was wearing he then gambled on the next hand that he would stake his life if he lost.. He lost and then tried to hang himself from a lamppost, but a passing policeman tried to save his life which resulted in a fight.. The policeman sustained a broken nose and back eyes.. Next stop Arrest and Court.. He said policeman had hit him with a cudgel and not shown him his ID.. Found guilty ,but judge let him off when his weeping wife and 4 children plead for him not to go to jail. A great story and true.
